Privacy Policy
Effective October 10, 2026.
Phosphene is a light you watch with your eyes closed. We keep the amount we know about you as small as we can. This page says what that is.
What we collect
When you use the app, it may send a few anonymous counts to our server. Each one holds only: the day and hour (UTC), the kind of event (a session started, finished or stopped early, the safety check accepted, or the app installed), which session it was, how long it ran, a rough device type (phone, tablet or desktop), and a rough screen refresh rate. Nothing in it says who you are.
Visitors have no accounts and are not given cookies. We do not use advertising or third-party analytics services, and we do not store your IP address or browser details with these counts.
The Embers list
If you enter your email on the Embers page, we keep that address, the date and time you entered it (UTC) and the page you entered it on. That is all: no IP address, no browser details, no cookie. We use it for one thing, to send you a note when Embers opens. We do not sell it or share it with anyone. If you would like it deleted, write to the contact address below and we will remove it. If you never enter an email, we never have one.
What stays on your device
Your settings, your answer to the safety check and a small marker that says whether this device has used Phosphene before are kept in your browser's local storage. The marker is a single word ("new" or "return"), not an identifier, and it is not linked to you. Anything you write in a journal or notes stays on your device unless a future feature says otherwise and asks first. You can clear all of it by clearing the site data in your browser.
Server logs
When you load the site, your device connects to our server, so your IP address is necessarily visible to it for that moment. The web server we use is not set up to write routine access logs for Phosphene. It may record your IP address briefly in error and diagnostic messages, and the app keeps addresses in memory only to limit abuse, for a few minutes (up to an hour for the Embers sign-up form), and never writes them to disk. Our hosting provider may keep its own network records, which we do not control.
What we do not do
We do not sell your data, rent it or share it with advertisers. We do not build profiles of people.
Children
Phosphene is not for anyone under 18, and it is not meant for children. We do not knowingly collect information from them.
Changes
If this policy changes, we will post the new version here and change the date above. If we ever add accounts or the Embers community, we will update this page first.
